In the 1920’s, leaflets and posters started appearing in this Irish town calling for the Black and Tans to get out of Ireland. The Tans, and their colleagues in the RIC and the British Army were trying to find out who exactly was behind it and, one evening when they were attempting to remove those leaflets and posters, they found out…

This farmer was at home, in his little cottage, when he heard gunshots nearby and then heard his cows in the field kicking-up a racket. He went out to see what was going on, and another gunshot rang out. He died four days later…

Ireland, 1926 – a split was now inevitable in the Republican Movement and a meeting was held in Dublin, at which tensions were high, and at which the leadership were said to be distant and were apparently concentrating more on preparing for future developments rather than the business at hand…

This Irish rebel was born over 150 years ago and greatly influenced political life in his day, but he had a genuinely tough time of it in his own country and in the various countries he worked in to further the Cause of Irish freedom. And the British gave him an even tougher time in 1916…
